Months before seasons across the country open, the team at Pnuma is asked to make gear recommendations. But, recommendations are never requested more frequently than they are now. Because even though here in Minnesota we’re supposed to hit a high of 80-degrees this weekend, we know the cold stuff is coming. Cold weather brings out big game. And it’s time to be out when they are.
To be warm, to move freely, confidently, and successfully in gear designed specifically to exceed the demands of bow hunters, we want to pass along our collective recommendations on base and mid-layers systems to help you perform at your absolute peak in the months ahead.
For next-to-skin warmth, the choices we offer frequently become personal v. technological in the minds of our customers. Both of our next-to-skin base layer systems will keep you warm and comfortable. They just do it differently.
IconX is the technological master of thermal regulation. 13 performance zones and the rest of the top and bottom are woven with hollow HydroWick™ yarn. The chambers fill with air that’s retained and heated by your body for warmth. Any sweat you work up is wicked away for comfort. And muscle support for key groups is enhanced. It’s high-tech design, fabric, and manufacturing at its best.
Merino Wool is worn by hunters who appreciate the wicking and thermal regulating qualities of a natural fabric. They know Merino Wool is soft and incredibly comfortable to wear. Our 100% Australian Merino Wool is amazingly soft. And since our Merino Wool ¼ zip pullover can be worn as your outer top layer during early season – the choice of Merino Wool pays off all season long.
Base Layers Combined
Many hunters have discovered the advantage of combining IconX and our Merino Wool base layers as a warm combination to hunt in when temperatures are cold in mornings and evenings but cool during days. You get the warmth, wicking, and support of IconX next-to-skin plus a warm layer to put over IconX – Merino Wool – to wear as your outer layer on top and the bottoms beneath your outer layer hunting suit pant. Even if you wear your outer layer jacket and pant all day you’ll stay warm and dry with the IconX and Merino Systems, and every move you make will be unrestricted and in stealth.
The Cold Weather Mother of them all
When the cold settles in there’s no more important part of your body to keep warm than your core. Keep you core warm and you’re on your way to keeping your body’s performance at peak levels. To accomplish that we introduced the IconX Heated Core Vest a few weeks ago. The Heated Core Vest provides warmth when you need it with carbon fiber heating elements that run across your mid-section, over your kidneys, and at the base of your neck. The HydroWick fabric of the Vest distributes heat evenly. The rechargeable battery will give you about 6 hours of heat at the low setting where it delivers consistent warmth of 100-degrees. It’s incredibly lightweight and provides total freedom of movement.
While second layers are all-too-often called mid-layers, the best of the best mid-layers can also serve as your outer layers depending on temperatures and activity level changes during your hunt.
Those are conditions The Insulator Jacket, Vest, and Pant live for.
Warmed by 700 power fill, featherless, waterproof, insulate, The Insulator Vest, Jacket, and Pant are made to be worn beneath your Selkirk, Selkirk Endurance, and Waypoint Hunting Systems during cold hunts. Made in Terra camo, the Jacket or Vest can be worn as outer top layers mid-day into late afternoon, depending on conditions. On the right days you can wear either or both all day long. Your apparel needs to shift as temperatures and your activity levels shift. A process made easy with our packable and easy on/off Insulators.
Introduced just this year, the incredibly warm Cascade Performance Mid-Layer System gives you the comfort of the softest fleece you’ll ever wear along with the a durable outside finish that is unmatched by any Hooded Pullover and Legging. The outer finish glides in and out from under outer layers for easy on/off. You get an incredibly warm layer with no bulk and complete freedom of movement.
For hunters who hunt out of blinds or predator hunt at night? The warmth and concealment of the Cascade Hooded Performance Mid-Layer is without equal. Complete your ground blind and/or predator hunting cold weather arsenal with the Cascade Glove with silicone palms for sure grip on your bow or rifle, the Cascade Performance Beanie, and the Cascade Neck Gaiter is great to have, and warm and comfortable to wear when cold temperatures hit and the wind blows.
Many choices. And there should be. That’s because every hunter’s conditions, the way we hunt, when we hunt, what we hunt, where we hunt, and tolerance for cold is different. But, the desire to stay warm and perform at our collective peaks is always there. We’ve got the right combination of base, mid-layers, and hunting suits to help every cold weather hunt be successful.
